Open Card:The dealer leaves the topmost card in the deck open. This card is termed as open card. The first player can either pick the open card or pick the next card on the deck.
Dealer:Dealer is the player who distributes the cards to all players.
Discarded Pile:Each time a player picks up a card, he has to discard a card from his hand. The cards discarded form a pile referred to as the discarded pile.
Joker:Joker in rummy is like a wild card in Uno. When you use it correctly, it can actually save the game.
Pulled Out Joker:A card is randomly pulled out from the deck by the player next to the dealer. This card is treated as a pulled-out joker. For instance, if the player pulls out 2 of hearts. In such a case, all the 2s will be treated as pulled-out jokers.
Sequence:Sequence is an arrangement of cards of the same sign in ascending or descending order of their values.
Pure Sequence (Natural Sequence):Pure sequence is a sequence that cannot use jokers for its completion.
Real Sequence (Artificial Sequence):Real sequence is a sequence that can be completed using jokers.
Meld (Set):Meld or set is an arrangement of cards of the same value but of different signs. For instance, 2 of hearts, 2 of spades and 2 of clubs can form a set.
Life:Life is the minimum arrangement of cards required for a hand to not be counted as a full hand. The rule for life varies based on the variations of Indian Rummy you are playing.
Full Hand:A hand is treated as a full hand when life isn’t completed.
First Drop:When a player quits the game before the first move in the game is played, it is termed as first drop.
Second Drop:When a player decides to quit the game later, it is termed as second drop.
Day 2: Understand the purpose of the game
A major chunk of learning rummy is done with when you have understood the rummy terminology. On day 2, you can try and understand the purpose of the game. There are many different variations of rummy games like 10 cards rummy game, 13 cards rummy game, 21 cards rummy game and 28 cards rummy game. The purpose of each game varies slightly. Here we will share the purpose of the 13 cards standard rummy card game for convenience.
In this variation, the life is formed from one pure sequence and one real sequence. The player must try to complete his hand before everyone else. To complete your hand, you need to have two sequences which form the life. The remaining two could either be melds or sequences. Playing a few rounds of rummy games on Khelplay Rummy will help you get a hang of it.
Day 3: Understand different ways to arrange sequences
Sequences can be made from high point cards as well as low point cards. You can make sequences using just number cards or just picture cards. Apart from these, you can also make sequences which are a combination of number cards and picture cards. For example, 9,10 and J of spades form a sequence. You may or may not use jokers to complete sequences. The trick of winning rummy lies in arranging and rearranging the sequences.
Day 4: Understand how to make melds
Melds are a combination of cards of same value but of different signs. For example, you can make a meld by combining A of hearts, A of spades and A of clubs. You may also make a meld by combining 9 of hearts, 9 of diamonds and 9 of spades. You may or may not use jokers to complete melds.
Day 5: Understand how best to use the jokers
Jokers can be extremely helpful in completing sequences and melds. You have 3-4 joker cards that are used as jokers in rummy. Apart from these, each deck has a few blank cards that may be used as jokers. The pulled-out jokers form the third type of jokers in rummy card games.
Understanding jokers effectively can take you closer to winning. Good players constantly rearrange the cards to make optimum use of the jokers.
Day 6: Understand things that no one tells you
While you understand the game in the first 5 days of the week, you gain deeper insights on the last two days. To learn rummy really well, you need to understand things that are not told to you. For instance, each card that the opponent disposes tell something about his hand. When the opponent disposes a card, it means that he does not need that card. It also implies he is not making a sequence using that card. So, you may safely dispose cards adjacent to that card and of the same sign. The cards he disposes also tells you what stage of the game your opponent is in. This can be a hint to choose first drop or second drop.
